_Dogs have been part of my life for decades, but I had never heard of a dog making constructions until Bella came along. I wasn't sure at first whether Bella's "sculpts" were actually purposeful behavior. The light went on the day I found Bella's tiger fleece braid arranged in a right angle, perfectly aligned with the corner of the rug next to my reading station on the couch.
There must be other dogs who do this sort of thing, I thought. After months of searching, I was thrilled to discover Dog Works: The Meaning and Magic of Canine Constructions , and the YouTube footage of a Doberman named Donnie, whose cloth toy constructions were featured in a National Geographic Special on dog intelligence. Meanwhile, the creativity of Bella's constructions continued to grow. I decided to create a website for her, as a way of sharing her gift and her sweetness with others. The response to Bella's website has been heartwarming, inspiring me to keep posting new material and to feature some of Bella's canine friends from time to time. Several of her slideshows are now posted on YouTube. The year 2011 culminated with a clip about Bella in Bark Magazine. I hope you enjoy Bella's website and please stay tuned! |
